How to survive solo travel - Things to know about solo travel

This post was sponsored by Cabana.

"Investment in Travel is an investment in yourself." - Matthew Karsten

Typically when I think about traveling somewhere, I have another companion in mind. Whether it be a college bud, my cousin, or a significant other, most of my travel stories often have a companion or two mixed in. What am I getting at? Evolution. Something new. Leaning into an adventure. As a student of fashion, I know first hand that art and life often converge and provide ample opportunities to notice where the lines intersect. In fashion, we appreciate change. As each season brings in new styles and old callbacks (here's looking at you, summer dresses), I decided to mix it up: AMAS traveled solo.

"Alone" and "Lonely" aren't the same thing
Solo travel tips put a premium on people mixing, but this can be fruitless—you chose to travel alone after all. On the flip side, big groups rarely have time for solo activities; you won't have this issue, so, Carpe Omnia!

Measure Expectations
Everyone wants the perfect start to their vacation in which everything continues to run smoothly. Be sure to pace yourself and breathe slowly through the tense (and unexpected) moments.

Hostel, Hotels...Cabana?
Smart, Simple, Safe, and Reliable. These are a few of the core values at Cabana. In this video, AMAS takes the new Cabana van for a spin instead of other familiar travel pursuits. Ditch the hostel, run from the hotel, and hop in the van, man.

Manage your Cash, watch your stash
Broke is a hell of a lousy joke when out and about, but even more so when traveling solo. Transient tactics aren't going to cut it in unfamiliar territory. As a solo traveler, do not get accustomed to freebies with no one to watch your back. Also, always have money available to you or don't go at all! It is far safer to be bored at home than stuck on the road with only a dime on your person.

iOs or Android approved
When perusing the attractions or any place that requires patiently waiting, use your phone to book reservations or grab tickets in advance. Doing so will optimize your time when traveling by yourself.

In conclusion, traveling solo has its pros and cons. Pros: solo travel gives you the ultimate freedom, and "doing nothing on vacation" is acceptable. Cons: certain situations will still go wrong (which is typical for any trip). You cannot expect everything to go according to plan. The difference is you are more comfortable traveling by yourself. I want to say a special thank you to Cabana for letting me use one of their vans. Until next time, stay safe and happy trails.

Networking: The Social Club

Networking is a structured plan to get to know people who will do business with you or introduce you to those who will. Typically, ineffective networkers attend several networking groups but talk to the same friend's each time. Obviously, this behavior defeats the entire purpose of networking. Knowing this Laidback Allure in conjunction with The Cloud Room created The Social Club. A gathering where creatives, influencers and business entrepreneurs can converse over drinks and good music.

Remember networking is inclusive, not exclusive. After learning people's names, don't be afraid to add those wallflowers standing on the fringes to your conversation. This practice allows you to seamlessly move in and out of conversations while being a connector. AMAS also suggests you use your wardrobe to your advantage as comfort starts with appearance. A simple rule is to always dress one level better than the suggested dress code. Lastly be an active listener. Listening makes one captivating and will inspire you to ask smarter questions. Consider what we think about speech, "Talk is cheap", "That's mere rhetoric", "Silence is golden". People don't value listeners because they will respond with answers. We value the people who care to listen.

Standout: With Your Wardrobe

DSC_6261.jpg

The first thing to plan for is your first impression. Whether it's winning a job or a date, a key to success is making the other person comfortable. Comfort starts with your appearance. Yet there are subtle ways to be distinct. With the right use of color, patterns, and accessories one can command attention without saying a word. This power will now put you in a position of influence.

Color.

Colors bring about an emotional response in each of us. They stimulate emotions and feelings subconsciously. There are several factors to consider when wearing color: the color of your hair, your skin tone, and your eye colors are some of the most important ones. When incorporating color also consider what some colors symbolize. It is no surprise that the business color blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, and wisdom.

DSC_6499.jpg

Patterns.

Like color, patterns must match the rest of the outfit, suit the occasion and be flattering on you. During Fall and Winter, we suggest adding some Plaid or Houndstooth to your wardrobe to make a statement. In the Spring and Summer Seersucker and Gingham are your game changers. Patterns not only set you apart aesthetically, but many times they add texture to your outfit.

Accessories.

Even in the most conservative environments accessories are your gateway to individuality. When used correctly these pieces will be conversations starters. Yes, ties and socks are the standard. Beyond that consider infusing your wardrobe with pocket squares, tie bars, and the less popular collar bars. In addition, frames can also be used as a practical form of self-expression. Remember the purpose of accessories are to pull everything together unless your outfit is muted make sure they don't speak to loud.
